Theme: Enoch Walked with God, Part 2
“By faith Enoch was taken up so that he would not see death: and he was not found because God took him up; for he obtained the witness that before his being taken up he was pleasing to God. And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.” (Hebrews 11:5,6)
“Then Enoch walked with God three hundred years after he became the father of Methuselah, and he had other sons and daughters.” (Genesis 5:22)
Thought:
For the first fourteen years in ministry, I served as a youth pastor in two churches. I remember a Youth Ministry conference speaker telling us that in almost every youth meeting, there were three types of individuals: curious, hungry, and committed. I have found this to be true with both youth and adults.
In Hebrews 11:6, the author is explaining how Enoch pleased God by faith. The first thing written is that he came to God. We come to God for various reasons. Often, God uses difficult circumstances in our lives to get our attention and to draw us to Himself. I find curiosity, hunger, and commitment to be ways of describing the emotions or desires that lead us to God.
Do you come to God often during the day to ask for His help, or respond to a verse He brings to your mind, or pray for a person you see or think of?
I find people are curious for various reasons. Sometimes they wonder, “Who is this Jesus?” or “Why should I believe in the Christian faith?” Nicodemus was curious about Christ, if He was the Messiah, and asked, “How can a man be born (again) when he is old?” (John 3:4) He asked several questions. Curious people do.
I saw kids come to our youth group with questions about God, but also questions about why their friends followed God and had faith in God. As I built friendships with these youth, I had the opportunity to discover some of those curiosities and answer some of those questions.
I find people sometimes are hungry, hungry to know more about God, even wondering why Almighty God gives man His attention. “When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained; what is man that You take thought of him, and the son of man that You care for him?” (Psalm 8:3,4)
A hungry person wants more of God. David wanted more of God in Psalm 27:4: “One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord and to meditate in His temple.”
A hungry person feeds on God’s word. “Your words were found, and I ate them, and Your words became for me a joy and the delight of my heart; for I have been called by Your name, O Lord God of hosts.” (Jeremiah 15:16)
I find committed people eager to study, dig, and learn more from God’s word and how to apply it to their lives. “If you seek her (wisdom from God) as silver and search for her as for hidden treasures; then you will discern the fear of the Lord and discover the knowledge of God.” (Proverbs 2:4,5)
They know and understand 2 Timothy 3:16 and saturate their heart and mind with God’s word so it can teach, reprove, correct, and train them in righteousness. Part of maturity is recognizing our lack of maturity and our great need and hunger for God’s work in us. A committed believer is also one who does what God shows him or her, by His grace. “But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.” (James 1:22)
God commends our curiosity, hunger, and commitment to know and follow Him. It shows me God wants us to know Him and walk with Him as Enoch did.
Reflection:
If you are curious, ask God questions and read the Bible, and then ask more questions.
If you are hungry, ask questions, and then feed on God’s word.
If you are committed to know and follow God, ask questions, feed on God’s word, study it, and make it the joy and delight of your heart as you follow Him.
Prayer:
Father, show me Your hand in the world around me, and help me walk with You daily. Make me more curious about you and hungry to know you better. Help me faithfully follow you today and eagerly read your word.
